'Brilliant' BBC thriller with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes that's already been remade twice in other countries

A BBC series is currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity after being remade in South Korea.

Reboots and revivals are often a surefire way for studios and production companies to make some serious dough.

Not only does rehashing content lower money-loss risks, but also it allows TV executives to breathe fresh life into beloved characters.

Earlier this year, director Kim Dong-hwi took the bones of a cherished Welsh TV series and turned it into a South Korean drama called Hide.

The 12-episode show stars Lee Bo-young, Lee Moo-saeng and Lee Chung-ah and follows a woman attempting to uncover secrets relating to her husband’s mysterious disappearance.

However, BBC viewers should already be familiar with the concept of Hide because it’s based on another thriller series called Keeping Faith.

The bilingual drama Keeping Faith consists of three seasons and features Welsh actors such as Eve Myles, Bradley Freegard and Steffan Rhodri.

45-year-old Eve portrays solicitor and mother-of-three Faith Howells, who is drawn into a puzzle when her husband and business partner Evan (played by Bradley) disappears.

Following its English language debut in 2018, The Guardian heralded Keeping Faith as ‘brilliant’ and being ‘a bit like Big Little Lies relocated to rural Wales’.

Other critics have also looked favourably on the show with both the first and second seasons having rare 100 percent ratings on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer.

Following the arrival of Hide in March, fans have been revisiting Keeping Faith and have taken to social media to have their say.

One user of X, formerly known as Twitter, took to the platform and wrote: “Obviously a personal fave of mine, Keeping Faith - to the truly eerie and disturbing Little Reindeer, each story from film to series had a captivating story and a uniqueness that keep you engaged!”

A second said: “For those looking for a binge TV series to watch, Keeping Faith on Acorn is the one. The actress playing the lead character is one of the best.”

“I must say the K-version is better than the original series Keeping Faith on BBC,” typed another.

A fourth said: “Just finished the final episode of Keeping Faith with the wonderful @TeamEveMyles & it was fantastic. A very emotional series, made even more teary by @Wadge’s incredible music. Very sad there isn’t a fourth series.”

Interestingly, the premise of Keeping Faith is so popular that in 2021 Julien Colonna directed a French version.

Like both the Welsh/English and South Korean versions, Gloria documents a woman’s frantic search for her missing husband.
