David and Victoria Beckham break silence on his ‘affair’ in new Netflix doc

The new documentary landed on Netflix today

David and Victoria Beckham have broken their silence on his ‘affair’ in a brand new Netflix documentary, saying the media attention at the time was the 'hardest period' for both of them.

The Beckhams are one of the most famous families in the world, something that’s been built masterfully off the back of the parents’ hugely successful careers in football, music and fashion.

Dad David is now at the centre of his very own Netflix documentary, which delves into the ups and downs of both his professional and personal life.

A synopsis for the series, which premiered on the streamer today, says: "Beckham, a four-part documentary series, tells the inside story of a global football star and cultural icon.

"David Beckham is one of the most known names on the planet, yet few people know who he really is. From his humble working-class beginnings in east London, his drive and determination to win, and the battle to find balance between ambition, love and family, David’s story is one of immense ups and downs.

"The series takes you on that rollercoaster and builds a surprising, personal and definitive story of one of the most recognisable and scrutinised athletes of all time.

"In Beckham, Academy Award-winner Fisher Stevens (Palmer, And We Go Green, The Cove) along with Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning producer John Battsek (One Day in September, Searching for Sugar Man, Winter on Fire) are granted unprecedented access to David, his wife Victoria, his family, his friends and his team-mates. The result is an intimate portrait of a man as well as a chronicle of late-modern sports and celebrity culture."

At one point, Victoria, 49, appears to allude to her husband’s alleged ‘affair’ - saying there was one time that saw her at her ‘most unhappy’.

The couple have previously denied that David had an affair when he was playing for Real Madrid in 2003.

While they didn’t speak about the alleged extra-marital relationship in the new docu-series, they did address the media fallout at the time.

“It was the hardest period because it felt like the world was against us,” she said. “Here’s the thing – we were against each other if I’m being completely honest.

“You know, up until Madrid sometimes it felt like us against everybody else but we were together, we were connected, we had each other.

“But when we were in Spain, it didn’t really feel like we had each other either.

“And that’s sad. I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me. It was a nightmare.

“It was an absolute circus — and everyone loves it when the circus comes to town right? Unless you’re in it.”

When asked if she ‘resented’ David, Victoria said: “If I’m being totally honest, yes I did. It was the most unhappy I have ever been in my entire life.”

The pair said the media attention from the alleged affair was 'difficult' to deal with.

She went on to say that she ‘internalised’ a lot of trauma as a means of supporting her husband’s career.

“It wasn’t that I felt unheard because I was always mindful of the focus that he needed,” Victoria said.

David also spoke about the speculation around his supposed affair, explaining how it affected both him and his family.

“There was some horrible stories which were difficult to deal with,” he recalled.

“It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage. Every time that we woke up we felt, you know, there was something else and you know we felt that, we both felt at the time that we were not losing each other but drowning."

Director Fisher Stevens asked how he and Victoria ‘survived’, prompting David to become teary-eyed.

He continued: “I don’t know, I don’t know. I don’t know how we got through it in all honesty."

David added that his wife is ‘everything’ to him, saying: “To see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we’re fighters. We needed to fight for each other and for our family. What we had was worth fighting for.

"But ultimately it’s our private life. There were some days I thought, ‘How am I going to go to work? How am I going to go on that training pitch and look as if nothing is wrong?’ I felt physically sick every day when I opened my eyes. How am I going to do this?”
