First Look At 'Luther' Series 5 Warns 'This Will Hurt'

The first look for the forthcoming fifth series of British crime hit Luther has dropped, warning us: "This will hurt".

Currently set to return to our television sets in early 2019, creator Neil Cross confirmed last year that the series will comprise of four episodes - not lots to go with, but certainly better than 2015's two.

Star Idris Elba, who stars as the titular detective, has promised fans that the new season would be 'classic Luther', telling the Radio Times that 'there is a lot of excitement about the characters that are in this one'.

And that includes Alice Morgan, the murderer-turned-ally of Luther who is played by Ruth Wilson.

In an interview with The Independent promoting Dark River last year, Wilson was asked whether she'd be reprising her character in Luther and she said that she would be.

"She is in it," she told the paper, but also added the following little nugget of information: "It's not what you expect. She's definitely back for a bit. [Alice is] Back with a vengeance."

There's no sign of her in the teaser - but then the first look doesn't really give much away, as it just features Luther walking towards the camera mysteriously.

It's more about that promise that this will 'hurt' that we're more interested in right now.

Along with next year's highly anticpated fifth series, Cross has also previouslyhinted at the possibility of a Luther film - saying he's totally up for it whenever Idris Elba's hectic schedule allows it.

"The fact is that Idris and I are bound in this shared relationship with this character and every TV series, we think it's going to be the end," Cross told Deadline.

"Not least because Idris is a very busy and has a successful career, but we always miss him when it's over and then I start coming up with ideas. We always come back for more, for no other reason than we love doing it.

"Hopefully in some incarnation, the character will continue."

He continued, saying that a film will always be at least slightly different from the TV series because of 'how long you have to tell a story'.

"Ultimately, whatever Luther story you tell, in whatever medium, has to focus on that character so in some ways it will be exactly the same because it will be about him,"

It's something Elba has also said he's game for, telling the Radio Times: "It's very much in our minds, the film. "I think it could be an amazing series of films.

"It's taken on some different legs, but it definitely feels like it would be magnified more - open Luther in terms of what he can do, on a film scale."

Get those fingers crossed, folks.
