Matthew Perry had beautiful response when asked how he wanted to be remembered when he died

Matthew Perry had a touching response to being asked how he would like to be remembered.

The star - who was best known for playing the beloved Chandler Bing in the hit sitcom Friends - passed away yesterday (October 28) aged 54, after the fire department responded to a 'water rescue'.

The actor was reportedly found in a hot tub at his Los Angeles residence after an apparent drowning, with no foul play suspected. A cause of death has not been released and an investigation remains ongoing.

The Los Angeles Police Department said it 'responded to the 1800 block of Blue Sail Rd for a death investigation on a male 4.10pm this afternoon'.

The news of his death was first confirmed by a statement from NBC - the network which aired Friends.

"We are incredibly saddened by the too soon passing of Matthew Perry," it wrote.

"He brought so much joy to hundreds of millions of people around the world with his pitch-perfect comedic timing and wry wit. His legacy will live on through countless generations."

Perry skyrocketed to fame in the 90s as the witty and sarcastic Chandler Bing in Friends, alongside David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow.

He was also incredibly open about his struggles with addiction to alcohol and opioids, bravely getting candid in a number of interviews before his death.

And now a clip of the star has resurfaced in which he details how he would like to be remembered.

The interview came as part of the press tour for his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, which hit shelves last year.

When asked how he'd like to be remembered, Perry said: "I would like to be remembered as somebody who lived well, loved well, was a seeker and his paramount thing is that he wants to help people.

"That's what I want."

Fans have been reacting to the touching clip with tributes to the late actor, with one writing: "You will always be remembered, Matthew. May you rest in peace."

"You lived well! You will be remembered the way you want to be remembered sir," said a second, while a third penned: "Grew up watching friends and still do. 54 is no age. Take it easy chandler bing."

And a fourth put: "Grew up watching Friends, and this guy was impeccable. "Goodbye Chandler Bing"."
