Anne Hathaway reveals ‘gross’ acts she was asked to do during auditions

Devil Wears Prada star Anne Hathaway encountered a 'gross' norm in the casting world

Being an actress is something that droves of young girls aspire to be, but it's a well known fact that there's a dark side to Hollywood.

While you get to dress up in costumes, become the love interest of handsome men and make a hefty sum off it if you make it big, it’s not always what it’s cracked up to be.

Or at least, it wasn’t a couple of decades ago when Anne Hathaway encountered strange practices which were considered the norm back then.

The Devil Wears Prada star, 41, opened up about the ‘gross’ things she was asked to do as a young and aspiring actress during the casting process, and it’s pretty weird.

The actor spoke to V Magazine regarding her time in the limelight and what a ‘chemistry test’ entailed for her back then.

The Oscar-winner didn’t disclose which film she was being cast for, but she did reveal how the experience made her feel.

But first she spoke of her experience during casting for her upcoming rom-com The Idea of You: “We asked each of the actors coming in to choose a song that they felt their character would love, that they would put on to get my character to dance, and then we’d do a short little improv."

She revealed how 29-year-old British actor Nicholas Galitzine chose the band Alabama Shakes fronted by lead singer Brittany Howard.

She said: “I heard Brittany’s voice and I just started smiling. And he saw me smile, so he relaxed, and we just started dancing.

“Nobody was showing off. Nobody was trying to get the gig. We were just in a space dancing. I looked over and Michael Showalter, our director, was beaming. Spark!”

But 20 years ago, that wouldn’t have been the vibe. In fact, it would have been a kissing-booth type of deal.

Anne explained: “Back in the 2000s – and this did happen to me – it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry, which is actually the worst way to do it.

“I was told, ‘We have 10 guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?’ And I thought, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’ because I wasn’t excited. I thought it sounded gross.

“And I was so young and terribly aware how easy it was to lose everything by being labelled ‘difficult’, so I just pretended I was excited and got on with it. It wasn’t a power play, no one was trying to be awful or hurt me.”

However, she didn’t need a kiss to know that her chemistry with Nicholas was bang on as she revealed: "I remember laughing when Nick walked in because he was so ridiculously perfect for the part.

"I just thought, 'He is it.'"
