Netflix's new rom-com Always Be My Maybe has won a legion of fans since it's release last weekend and Keanu Reeves' surreal cameo is definitely one of the most notable parts of the film.

The Hollywood actor, 54, plays a heightened, nightmarish version of himself in the movie, which follows childhood sweethearts Sasha (Ali Wong) and Marcus (Randall Park), who reconnect after 15 years apart.

After a chance meeting in San Francisco, sparks start flying once again between the pair, despite them not being two very different people - and a love rival in the form of Matrix actor Keanu.

And while the film has received much acclaim, it's Keanu's scene-stealing appearance that has Netflix viewer's branding the flick as a "revelation".

Striding slow-mo into pretentious restaurant Maximal, the actor passionately makes out with Sasha at the dinner table in front of a stunned Marcus, before they hilariously lament about each other's thumbs (we're not joking).

Keanu then requests a dish that "plays with time" before he begins to weep over his meal while listening to the recorded mournful cry of his dinner being slaughtered.

The Speed actor's appearance in the When Harry Met Sally-esque comedy caused a flurry of fans to take to Twitter to discuss his hilarious 20-minute cameo - that has since spawned Twitter account, 'Keanu Reeves Walking To Music'.

One fan wrote: "If Keanu Reeves doesn't win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Always Be My Maybe, why do we even hand out awards for acting?"

"The Keanu Reeves section of Always Be My Maybe may well be my favourite 20 or so minutes of the whole of 2019," another said.

A third lamented: "Keanu Reeves in Always Be My Maybe is an acting revelation".

The film stars Randall Park and Ali Wong, who also wrote the script.

However, Keanu's unexpected character is no coincidence as writer and actress Ali Wong revealed the star, who is the son of an American with Chinese-Hawaiian ancestry, was her first choice for the part.

The comedian, who co-write the script with co-star Randall, told PEOPLE that aside from comedic timing and acting talent, they wanted someone of Asian descent.

She said: "It was really important to me that all of [Sasha's] love interests were Asian-American.

"And we wanted to find a sexy Asian-American man who would be Marcus' worst nightmare if he decided to confess his feelings. In everything I do it's very important to show my attraction and desire towards Asian-American men."

The actress, 37, later told The Hollywood Reporter: "The only person in the entire universe who fits all those parameters is Keanu Reeves."
