With stats proving that films with female leads earn more at the box office, there's no wonder Amazon Studios snapped up Mindy Kaling's new movie (that she wrote, produced and stars alongside British national-treasure, Emma Thomspon in) for a record-breaking sum. And the trailer for the new movie, Late Night, is officially here (squeal).

There's been a constant buzz about the film since its Sundance premier and subesequent purchace by movie giant, Amazon Studios, for a record-breaking £10 million ($13 million). No pressure then, Mindy.

The new trailer sets the scene and smart and hilarious tone, which Mindy is known for.

Here's the story in a nutshell: Katherine Newbury (played by Emma) is in danger of being ousted from her long-running late-night talk show.

Enter Molly (played by Mindy), who provides a fresh perspective that's lacking in the currently all-white male writers room.

Molly tells Katherine: "You're a little old and a little white." To which Katherine replies: "What can I do about that?"

Katherine hopes Molly can help shake things up enough to save the show as she tells her: "I need your pushiness and lack of boundaries."

A story with two smart and complicated women making their way in the patriarchy? We're there. Even better: The film also has a female director, Nisha Ganatra.

"I think this movie setting a record at Sundance is so important because the leads are a woman over the age of 50 and a woman of colour," Nisha told Glamour.

"That, sadly, is radical alone, but there was so much talk of 'Oh my God, will this make money? Is this marketable? Who will go see this?'

"The fact that this movie broke the record at Sundance is so significant and so exciting and so amazing because it validates that you can tell your story. You can tell the story that people don't think is worth telling, and it will find its audience and people will reward you for it." Cue raising hands emoji.

Late Night will be released on Amazon Prime Video on Thursday, 6th June 2019.
