It was cancelled last-minute several weeks ago, but after a long wait, ITV has finally aired its controversial true-crime documentary about serial-killer couple Fred and Rose West.

The show: Fred and Rose West: The Real Story with Trevor McDonald was originally scheduled to premiere on the 31st January, but was pulled from the schedule by ITV just hours before its transmission start time due to unspecified 'legal reasons'.

Disappointed fans were left in the dark and had to wait for weeks before ITV finally rescheduled the special to air this Thursday.

And it promised some explosive, never-before-seen information about the UK's most notorious killer couple.

The Real Story was presented by national treasure and acclaimed journalist, Sir Trevor McDonald, as he travelled to the literal scene of the crime: 25 Cromwell Street, Gloucestershire, where the Wests carried out many killings and crimes.

A sister of one of the Wests' victims, Juanita Mott, spoke with Sir Trevor and he also interviewed one of the killers' former lodgers.

Juanita Mott's sister said of the Wests: "To call them mentally ill is an insult to the mentally ill.

"They're evil. I call them evil."

The Wests' former lodger admitted that she may have heard sounds of abuse from the killer couple's children during her short stay in their home. But unfortunately, she was too scared to report it, even once she had left.

It might sound shocking, but a lot of this information had already been revealed to true-crime fans in previous documentaries and films.

So by the end of the show, viewers were questioning what the 'legal reasons' were that had delayed The Real Story's transmission at the end of January.

Fred killed himself while awaiting trial for his crimes, including killing his own daughter, Heather. However his wife Rose is still serving her sentence and will be in prison for the rest of her life for the role she played in the slaying of multiple women between 1967 and 1987.
