True crime drama The Act, based on the story of Gypsy Rose and Dee Dee Blanchard, has an official UK release date.

The Hulu original series is about "a girl trying to escape the toxic relationship she has with her overprotective mother," but anyone who's familiar with the story knows it goes a lot deeper than that.

It is based on the true story of Gypsy Rose, who is currently serving a 10-year sentence in relation to the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, who pretended for years that Gypsy was terminally ill.

Two months after its release on the US streaming service The Act, starring Joey King, has an official UK release date.

The anthology series will land on Amazon Prime on 15th June, which means it's just over a month until UK true crime fans can view.

To the outside world, Gypsy Rose was a poor cancer stricken girl with a host of illnesses from leukaemia to muscular dystrophy - but her dedicated mother Dee Dee was always by her side.

That's why it came as such a shock when Dee Dee was found bludgeoned to death in her own home while her wheelchair bound daughter was nowhere to be seen.

At first, people assumed Gypsy Rose must've been kidnapped by her mother's attacker, which is why everyone was delighted when she was found just days later. However, to everyone's surprise - Gypsy was found not as the thin, bald cancer patient they knew her as, but as a strong woman who was capable of walking and eating on her own.

Questions began to be asked over how Gypsy could've changed so dramatically overnight. Had she ever been sick? And what on earth happened to her mother?

When she was just a small child, Dee Dee took Gypsy Rose to the hospital convinced she had sleep apnea, despite there being no obvious signs. After that she determined that Gypsy had an unspecified chromosomal disorder. As a result, Dee Dee obsessively watched her daughter, living in fear that disaster could strike at any moment.

Fast-forward to 2015, Dee Dee was found bludgeoned to death in her home, with Gypsy nowhere to be seen. Now, she's serving a 10-year prison sentence in relation to her mother's murder.

You can watch their twisted relationship unfold in The Act on Amazon Prime from 15th June.
