Sir Trevor McDonald's documentary on Rose West and Myra Hindley aired on ITV last night, and let's just say fans were rather divided.

Rose West & Myra Hindley: Their Untold Story delved into the prison years of two of Britain's most infamous and evil criminals, who embarked on a love affair after meeting in jail.

And while some found the salacious doc utterly fascinating, others felt that focusing on something so trivial as a romance felt tasteless, given their heinous crimes.

"Myra Hindley & Rose West documentary on ITV is mental..." one person wrote. "Didn't realise they were in prison together and ended up as lesbian lovers.

"If you'd told me this story in 2019 I wouldn't believe it but being told in 2020 makes it seem entirely possible. #rosewest #myrahindley".

Meanwhile another enthused: "Flip me this Rose West and Myra Hindley documentary on ITV is absolutely mental. I'm in awe watching it so so sickining (sic)".

A third was less impressed by ITV's offering, referring to the fact the doc was trending on Twitter by writing: "It's bizarre seeing Myra Hindley & Rose West trending in the UK bc apparently they were dating in prison? @ITV is this documentary even necessary?

"They are 2 of the most well known women serial killer in the UK for their horrific crime in two separate cases more than a decade ago (sic)."

As a fourth viewer agreed: "ITV need to rethink what they give primetime slots to. Who cares about what Rose West and Myra Hindley got up to in prison?!

"Pure sensationalism & really not very interestingly. Also nothing educative here."

Moors murderer Hindley was dubbed one of the most wicked women in the UK for killing five children in the 1960s - alongside lover Ian Brady - while West was found guilty of 10 similar murders with her husband Fred West, including their own daughter.

Shedding fresh light on the murdering duo, the 60-minute documentary told how both women resided in the H 'Hell Wing' in HMP Durham, and bonded over similar crimes during their time behind bars.

Aside from whether the ITV doc was appropriate or not, some fans simply expressed their disbelief that the pair were ever allowed to mingle in jail.

"Why on earth were Myra Hindley and Rose West allowed in the same wing in prison? #ITV," one wrote.

Featuring an array of witnesses, including fellow prisoners, the doc will looked into how Hindley and West grew close in jail, with their friendship eventually developing into an affair.

Viewers learnt how their relationship eventually cooled off as they battled for the role of 'jail royalty' and soon the pair turned into rivals.

As the only two women to be given life sentences behind bars (meaning they would never be released) the doc also explored how Hindley tried to manipulate people from jail, such as persuading a nun-turned-prison guard to help her escape.

West, meanwhile, demanded favours from her children and attempted to control their lives, even from jail.

She still had episodes of extreme anger and rage, something she also displayed on the outside world.
