Need a good cry? We've got just the thing: Pixar has released a new 2D animated short called Kitbull and it'll kick you right in the warm and fuzzies.

The animation depicts the unlikely friendship between a tiny, skittish cat and an abused pitbull and the story is set in San Francisco's Mission District.

The short was directed by Pixar's Rosana Sullivan and produced by Kathryn Hendrickson. In a 'behind the scenes' film that accompanies the short, Rosana explains: "To be fully honest, it started from a cat video... I loved watching cat videos in times of stress."

"At first, I just wanted to draw something that made me feel good and was fun, but it evolved into something more personal to me eventually."

"Growing up, I was always very sensitive and very shy, and had actually a lot of trouble making connections, making friendship," she continued.

"So I related to this kitten because it never really stepped outside of its comfort zone to be vulnerable and make a connection."

The moving short is part of of Pixar's new animation project: SparkShorts, which hopes to help give a platform to emerging artists and voices.

Pixar president, Jim Morris, said about the project: "The SparkShorts program is designed to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques, and experiment with new production workflows.

"These films are unlike anything we've ever done at Pixar, providing an opportunity to unlock the potential of individual artists and their inventive filmmaking approaches on a smaller scale than our normal fare."

Fans are loving the video and have commented in force on the emotional short movie.

One said: "I've watched this like 4 times and I cried 4 times."

While another commented: "This made me cry more than any short I've ever seen by pixar. Seeing any animal abused makes me so upset. This was a fantastic message as well, one of the most emotional ones they have ever made. Pitbulls can be the sweetest dogs, add on a good owner to that and you double it."

While a third quipped: "It isn't Pixar unless you cry at the end!"
