The BBC has released the first official look at series five of Peaky Blinders, and Tommy Shelby is going to face his 'darkest force yet'.

Fans already know that Tommy, played by Cillian Murphy, is going to be in government, and the new MP can be seen riding a horse in the sneak peek shared by the Beeb.

What Tommy is doing remains to be seen, but he looks troubled by something as he rides along the dark moors in the picture.

The story will pick up after the financial stock market crash of 1929, and will focus on Tommy as he sets his sights on the British government.

Here's the official season five synopsis: "Series five of Steven Knight's crime family saga finds the world thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929.

"Opportunity and misfortune are everywhere. When Tommy Shelby MP (Cillian Murphy) is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realises that his response will affect not just his family's future but that of the entire nation."

Cillian will be joined by Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Finn Cole, Kate Phillips and Natasha O'Keefe in season five, who are all reprising their roles in the BBC gangster drama.

Filming is already underway in Manchester, and Paul, who plays Arthur Shelby, already shared behind-the-scenes photos of himself in full costume for his fans.

"The story of the Peaky Blinders and of the Shelby family gets woven into the political fabric of Britain and Europe as the 1920s end and the '30s begin," creator Steven Knight said on Thursday.

"Tommy Shelby faces the darkest force he has ever faced and his struggle is as relevant today as it was then."

There's currently no word on when the Shelby gang will be back on screens, although fans have been promised the series will return in 2019.
