Operation Live viewers watched the moment surgeons performed a kidney transplant so a doting dad could save his son's life.

The Channel 5 show saw Daniel donate his kidney to 33-year-old Eugene, who has autoimmune disease lupus which led to kidney failure.

Daniel's kidney had been removed before the cameras started rolling at the Royal London Hospital, however the two and a half hour live programme showed surgeons transplanting the organ in Eugene, in real time.

Thanks to a multi-camera set up, viewers were given an extreme close-up view of the operation led by Rajesh Sivaprakasam, and the results were pretty incredible.

Operation Live is hosted by Nicky Campbell and a specialist surgical expert, who explains the operation in detail as it's happening.

Eugene, who can be seen receiving the kidney transplant, is married with a three-year-old son, however is currently on dialysis with a machine at home to help him.

"I can't wait to get rid of this machine because, although it's a lifesaver, it's a burden because it's restricted the kind of lifestyle that I used to have," Eugene told cameras.

"With a new kidney, I'll be able to go back to the normal lifestyle I used to have."

Despite the graphic, and often gruesome scenes, viewers couldn't help but praise the incredible NHS.

Operation Live continues on Wednesday at 10pm on Channel 5.
