What else are we supposed to do while we eat our chips and gravy?

Nothing beats a good old true crime documentary, whether it's the horror of Abducted In Plain Sight or the pure evilness of The Ted Bundy Tapes.

Ever since Netflix launched Making A Murderer in 2015, there's been a huge appetite true crime documentaries and films following suit, but it seems Northerners are watching them more than anyone else.

According to Google Trends, people in the North are far more likely to watch programmes about serial killers and other true crime than people from any other parts of the UK.

But why do we love true crime so much? According to experts, from being children we are drawn to good versus evil in addition to being interested in acts we would never in a million years replicate, you know, like being a serial killer.

Forensic psychologist Dr Paul G Mattiuzzi told Lovin Manchester: "We want some insight into the psychology of a killer, partly so we can learn how to protect our families and ourselves."

This point was emphasised by Dr Michael Mantell, former chief psychologist of the San Diego Police Department. He told Mental Floss: "I think our interest in crime serves a number of different healthy psychological purposes."

Although it's normal to take an interest, Dr Mantell suggests we shouldn't take it too far... "If all you do is read about crime and ... all you do is talk about it and you have posters of it, and you have newspaper article clippings in your desk drawer, I'd be concerned."

Thankfully, good old Netflix has taken time to write a list of all the best binge-worthy true crime series.

Evil Genius (
Netflix)

The online streaming giant recommends Shadow of Truth, Casting Jonbenet, Evil Genius, The Confession Tapes, The Keepers, Wild Wild Country and Captive for 18 Years: The Jaycee Lee Story.

Another must watch as got to be FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, a documentary that follows the failed festival that lead to the organiser being sent to prison for fraud.

What an incredible viewing selection.
