Mrs Doubtfire Is Being Turned Into A Broadway Musical

It's been revealed that a musical stage production of the beloved 1993 film Mrs Doubtfire is underway, and we can't wait.

The musical is reportedly set to debut on New York's Great White Way, although a date has not yet been confirmed.

A statement released on Tuesday by American theatrical producer Kevin McCollum and Fox Stage Productions confirmed the news.

It said: "Mrs Doubtfire is such a beloved story, both laugh-out-loud hilarious and extremely moving.

"Getting this team together and crafting Mrs Doubtfire for the stage has been pure joy. We can't wait to get into production."

Fans of the iconic 90s film have been unable to control their excitement on social media.

One said: "A Mrs Doubtfire musical.........what????? I'm so on that train [sic]."

Another added: "Oh my gosh! Yes! I can't wait. Mrs Doubtfire is being turned into a musical [sic]."

Four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks will direct the project, and Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick will write the music and lyrics for the show.

John O'Farrell and Karey will write the book for the stage version of Mrs Doubtfire.

It's not yet been confirmed who will play the role of Mrs Doubtfire, who was played by the late Robin Williams in the original movie.

This isn't the first time the blockbuster has been rumoured to be hitting the stage, in 2015 Oscar winning composer Alan Menken revealed an adaptation was in the early stages.

However, a year later he revealed to Digital Spy that the idea was 'on ice'. He said: "Mrs Doubtfire went through a change of lyricist, and then also a dramaturgical evolution.

"At the moment, the best thing I could say is that it's on a creative hiatus."

It was also rumoured late last year that there could be a remake of the film with Kevin Hart starring as Mrs Doubtfire.

Speaking to Cinema Blend about the new reboot of 1995 film Jumanji - which Williams stars in as Alan Parrish - Kevin Hart was asked which other Robin Williams film he'd like to take on.

"I'll stay on the Robin Williams train and say that if I could jump into Mrs. Doubtfire," the actor said.

"That was a very amazing performance on both ends for him. I think that's one I'd love to get to play in."
