Hands up who's ever wanted to own hundreds of dogs? It may sound like the dream, but the reality is probably less fun than it sounds.

However, a new Channel 5 show, The Woman With 106 Dogs, takes a look at the extreme pet obsessives who have taken on dozens of pets.

According to Channel 5, there are an estimated 71 million pets in UK households, but only 5 per cent of British dog owners own more than two dogs.

They include Tamara Lloyd, who shares her home with 106 dogs but is at risk of running out of the donations that keep her and her pack going.

Lloyd runs The Alternative Animal Sanctuary in Lincolnshire, where she takes on abandoned pets who have nowhere else to go.

She takes on animals with serious behavioural issues, who have, for example, bitten people before. Lloyd says she can't say no if she is offered a new dog, as if she doesn't take them on, the animals are at risk of being put down.

Lloyd relies on donations to fund the dogs' care, but is running low on both cash and space, with the average dog costing £21,000 over its lifetime.

Viewers will see Lloyd grappling with the struggle of running her sanctuary; in May, according to Lincolnshire Live, 85 animals were seized from the sanctuary after concerns about their welfare, although Lloyd hit back and said she had already offered the animals to the RSPCA and that they "would not take them".

In the episode, there is also a pensioner running a car boot sale to provide for the 30 needy cats that rule her home.

Viewers will also watch the birth of a litter of puppies at the home of a reclusive woman who shares her house with 34 former show dogs, and there's also a couple who live with a menagerie of almost 100 pets.

As well as giving us a look at the motivations behind owning so many pets, the show also offers an eye-opening insight into just how expensive keeping all these animals really is.

The Woman with 106 Dogs will be shown on Channel 5, Sunday at 7pm.
