Friends producers managed to create a storyline more divisive than Brexit when Rachel Green and Joey Tribbiani finally got together in series nine.

But, their romance wasn't last as Rachel found her way back to her former flame and the father of her child, Ross Geller, in the heart wrenching last episode that saw her get off the plane.

Fans were divided over Rachel and Joey's late blooming relationship, and it turns out that Matt LeBlanc, the man behind Joey, did not want the story to go ahead.

Warner Bros.

Friends executive producer and director Kevin S Bright told Digital Spy: "I can tell you this - in the beginning, Matt LeBlanc did not want to do that story.

"He was very firmly against it, saying that he's Ross' friend, and that the type of friend that Joey is would never go and take someone else's girlfriend."

Kevin went on to explain that it took "a lot of conversations" to convince Matt to get onboard with the storyline, adding that the audience learned to accept it after the initial shock - although we know a few Friends fans who'd disagree with that one.

Warner Bros.

"I think, if she's not going to be with Ross, who else would you want her with?" he continued.

"That went okay with the audience. No big letters on that one!"

The shock revelation comes after Kevin admitted that when Ross and Rachel initially got together, they were never actually supposed to go 'on a break'.

Whether you're team Ross or team Rachel on the argument, it turns out that the 'break' plotline was a secondary thought after producers felt there was just something missing from their relationship.

"I would say initially when [Ross and Rachel's relationship] was planned it wasn't planned that way, that came a little bit later," Kevin explained, referring to the to the break.

"It allowed us to have fun with the show and give people something to root for.

"We were well aware the audience wanted to keep them together but everything that was keeping them apart - we realised when we got them together when the first kiss happened we go, 'Wow, the air has kind of gone out of the balloon.' There wasn't that sexual tension anymore."
