It might have been 20 years since the last The Matrix film, but it's now been announced that the movie franchise is set to return for a fourth instalment.

The popular sci-fi films, which first hit screens in March 1999, are now getting another sequel, with Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures confirming they've officially started working on The Matrix 4.

Lana Wachowski - who worked all three movies - has been hired to write, direct and produce the new film, while Carrie-Anne Moss and Keanu Reeves will also reprise their iconic roles as Trinity and Neo.

Eeeek! We can't wait to see their iconic style moments revived.

"Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now," said Lana as she reflected on the first three movies, which she co-directed with her sister Lilly.

"I'm very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."

Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman, said about the news: "We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana.

The Matrix Franchise

"Lana is a true visionary, a singular and original creative filmmaker, and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe."

Lana will be enlisting the help of Cloud Atlas novelist David Mitchell and The Lazarus Project writer Aleksandar Hemon to make sure the script is top notch.

This is the first time fans will be able to re-enter The Matrix universe since the most recent in the franchise, The Matrix Revolutions, which aired back in 2003.

It's still unknown whether Laurence Fishbourne will rejoin as Morpheus or if Jada Pinkett-Smith will return as Niobe.

While the film's production won't officially begin until 2020, fans can now rest easy knowing that there's more excitement to come.

It's a good thing leather trench coats and tiny sunglasses are having a moment, because we'll need to be whacking them out again when the film hits cinemas!
