The fifth season of Line of Duty has been gripping viewers for six weeks, but it's finally come to an end, much to the disappointment of its fans. Its finale aired on Sunday night, but not before Martin Compston, who plays D.S Steve Arnott, stunned viewers on Sunday Brunch with his real accent...

As DS Steve Arnott, Martin has a strong and clear South East London accent. Martin appeared on Sunday Brunch to discuss Line of Duty with Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer, but blew viewers away with his real accent.

The pair probed Martin about the show's finale, but he refused to give anything away. However, many viewers were shocked to hear just how he refused to give it away.

While Martin's character Steve is very much English in the popular BBC drama, he is 100 per cent Scottish in real life, with a strong accent.

This was big news to many watching at home, with fans taking to Twitter to express their shock.

Speaking in his natural Scottish twang, the 34-year-old actor joked with Tim about his accent, who said: "I'm not sure I like you speaking like that. People get so surprised when you speak."

Martin quipped: "Well, not Scottish people!"

Many viewers tweeted Martin about his accent, with one saying: "Wow! Anyone else gobsmacked that @martin_compston from #lineofduty5 has a strong Scottish accent on @SundayBrunchC4."

Another joked: "There's an imposer with a Scottish accent pretending to be you."

A third said: "MARTIN COMPSTON IS A SCOTTISH???!! PERSON!???!!"

But others weren't surprised, being bigger fans of Martin - they also maybe know that acting sometimes involves pretending to be someone else.

Martin was born in Greenock and was previously a professional footballer for Aberdeen and Greenock Morton.

Thankfully, Martin took the comments in his stride, as presumably he's pretty used to causing confusion with his accent by now!
