DC Comics has just dropped a its latest first full-length trailer for its upcoming movie Joker - and it takes a dark new look at the infamous supervillain.

The film, which is directed by Todd Phillips, stars Joaquin Phoenix and premieres later this month at the Venice Film Festival - which started on Wednesday (August 28).

It follows the story of the character's early life as a stand-up comedian, his complex personality and most importantly the descent into madness that made him the villain we know today.

While fans have seen teaser clips of the movie before, the full trailer released by Warner Bros offers a proper look at Arthur Fleck in all his eeriness.

While the trailer doesn't show much of the Joker's violence, the film is rated R so we know to expect it in cinemas.

It does, however, show his unhinged personality. At one point, he's seen pulling faces at a little girl on the bus, while in a darker scene, he's seen laughing manically and fleeing a crime scene in his infamous mask after appearing to have caught a taste for evil.

"All I have are negative thoughts," he is heard telling his therapist at the start - which is certainly a warning sign.

The trailer also gives us a glimpse of Robert De Niro as Murray Franklin, a talk show host who helps to trigger Arthur's change of character.

Plus, Zazie Beetz makes a first appearance as Sophie Dumond.

Discussing the concept behind the film, Todd Phillips told Empire: "We didn't follow anything from the comic-books, which people are gonna be mad about.

Warner Bros

"We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from.

"That's what was interesting to me. We're not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It's about this man."

Joker airs in cinemas on October 4.
