BBC One just unveiled its programme slate for 2020 and one upcoming programme jumped out at us: Inside Man, a crime thriller from Sherlock writer Steven Moffat.

Announced at Edinburgh TV Festival, the four part mini-series centres on a death row prisoner in the US and a woman trapped in a cellar under an English vicarage, who "cross paths in the most unexpected way."

Intriguing...

Bafta and Emmy award-winning writer Steven Moffat - who was responsible for Doctor Who and Dracula as well as the TV adaptation of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle crime novels - is taking on the project, due to go into production in late 2020.

The series is being produced by Hartswood Films for BBC One.

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says: "In our ongoing relationship with Steven and Sue (Vertue), they sent us this mini-series which Steven had written on spec and we commissioned it instantly.

"The script is a page-turner and grips you from the outset, and Charlotte [Moore] and I couldn't resist bringing this story to BBC One."

Charlotte Moore, BBC Director of Content, announced Inside Man as well as a raft of other upcoming BBC shows at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Thursday (22nd August).

Other programmes in the slate include Ridley Road by Sarah Solemani (Barry, Aphrodite Fry) which tells the story of "one brave young woman's fight against the rise of fascism on the cusp of the Swinging Sixties", and When It Happens To You, a drama by the producers of Three Girls which explores issues around abortion in Northern Ireland and the families affected by it.

Other shows include a documentary on mental health in male sport lead by The Duke of Cambridge, and a documentary on extinction by David Attenborough.

Talking about the BBC's aims for the coming year, Charlotte says: "We are hugely proud of the programmes we've had on BBC One this year, but we are aware that we can't stand still if we are to keep up with what the audience wants."

These changes include making programmes available for longer on iPlayer and "richer offer" for both young and old.

Exciting stuff.
