Horror films aren't for everyone, but for fans of the genre, they can be so much more than just something to whack on Netflix when they're bored.

Fans of the spooky genre are often misconceived as psychopaths who lack empathy, but now horror fans all over the world are taking to Twitter to explain just what the genre means to them.

The #ImAHorrorfan movement was prompted when Jonathan Barkannukah responded to tweet from Uber Facts, which claimed: "People who prefer gory horror films typically have low empathy, high sensation seeking, and - among males - a strong bond with the killer."

He responded: "Time and time again, horror fans are uncharacteristically mislabeled, sneered at, and seen as dangerous. The truth is that you're all some of the most generous, friendly, and beautiful people out there. So let's show the world who we are and proudly say #ImAHorrorFan!"

Hundreds of horror fans joined in on the trend to defend to genre, and talk about what it means to them.

Well, that's Uber Facts told.
