In the gripping TV finale of His Dark Materials last night, viewers were left devastated when Lyra's father betrayed her, by killing her best friend Roger - it was a savage end to the first series.
If you had read the trilogy of books however previously, you would've known the tragedy was on its way, but for those who were new to the story it was a shocker of an end.
Lyra Silvertongue (Dafne Keen) was seen coping with the betrayal by her dad Lord Asriel (James McAvoy), who chose to sacrifice her pal Roger Parslow (Lewin Lloyd), to prove the existence of 'Dust' and open up a portal to a new world.

In doing so, he kidnaps Roger, forcing him into a splicing cage to carry out intercision, which meant he was pulled apart from his daemon Salcilia, causing instant death - something Lord Asriel knew would happen, but went ahead anyway.
Lyra tried her best to save him, but by the time she got there, nothing could be done, leaving her bereft.
And it was this scene, with Lyra cuddling Roger's dead body that left viewers in bits.

People took to Twitter to express their solemnity, with one saying: "Can't believe they killed roger #HisDarkMaterials" alongside a crying emoji.
Another said: "the lone tear on roger's cheek...i'm not strong enough for this i'm really not #HisDarkMaterials".
A third added: "I've read the books and expected the death of Roger, but still, God damn! #HisDarkMaterials".
A fourth commented: "Pan looking in that cage for Roger's daemon was the saddest thing ever".

Another said: "Literally me shouting at the telly #HisDarkMaterials #Roger #bbcone".
But it proved the perfect step into the second series, 'The Subtle Knife', with Lyra choosing to follow her father through the portal into the next world.

We'll have to wait until the second season to see if she'll avenge her deceased friend and deliver justice.
