Ultimate frenemies Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari reportedly won't be rejoining their former co-stars in the reboot of The Hills: New Beginnings but for entirely different reasons.

The upcoming series was announced at the MTV VMAs on Monday evening, with some of the show's former stars - Heidi and Spencer Pratt, Audrina Patridge, Stephanie Pratt, Justin Bobby, Frankie Delagado and Jason Wahler - reuniting on the red carpet, eight years after the final episode aired.

Reality icons LC and Kristin were notably absent from the nostalgic reunion, and sources have claimed that neither of them has signed up to the new reboot, which is set to premiere in 2019.

As for Lauren, an insider told People: "She's in a different place in her life. But she wants everyone to enjoy themselves. She wishes everyone the best."

Last year, LC welcomed her son, Liam, with hubby of almost four years, William Tell, and it sounds like she has her hands full working on her fashion collection for Kohl's.

"She loves being a mother and focusing on her family and on her work," the source added.

Kristin's absence on the other had is reportedly due to her contractual obligations with E!, as the mum-of-three's TV show with husband Jay Cutler, Very Cavallari, aired on the network earlier this year.

"She can't do the show because she has a contract with E!," the source explained.

"But she's still close with Heidi and Spencer and is excited for them."

Lauren and Kristin's feud all began when the paired both starred on MTV's Laguna Beach, and were caught up in an on-screen love triangle with Stephen Colletti.

The tension continued through the series, up until Laguna Beach spin-off The Hills was launched in 2006 and LC headed off to Hollywood with Natasha Bedingfield's 'Unwritten' blasting out her Mercedes.

The two didn't cross paths on reality TV again until Kristin made an appearance in LC's final episode of The Hills - Speidi's wedding - taking over the role as leading lady for the last two seasons.

Despite not joining the likes of Spencer, Heidi and Audrina on the red carpet, Lauren's work bestie, Whitney Port, has confirmed that she will be in the reboot.

Taking to her Instagram account, Whitney shared an image of an old VMAs look, writing: "Throw back to my first VMAs look. Good thing I get to go back and make up for my insane looks on #thehills on the NEW HILLS REBOOT!!!

"Maybe they'll let me out of the fashion closet this time."

Brody Jenner is also reportedly 'in talks' for the reality show's revival.
