'The Shining' Is Getting A Spin-Off TV Series

We're officially shook.

It's the slow-burn cinematic chiller that gave us a very real fear of identical twins and hedge mazes.

Now, The Shining is being turned into a TV series by Star Wars director JJ Abrams.

The original 1980 horror classic directed by Stanley Kubrick was based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, published in 1977.

Abrams' production won't be a reboot as such. Instead, it's a ten-part series set in the ominous world of The Shining.

If it's anything like the original, whose scenes have won a place in horror movie history ("REDЯUM!", "Heeeeere's Johnny!", that bath tub moment... we could go on) then we're in for a nail-biting ride.

Titled Overlook in a nod to The Shining's fictional Overlook Hotel, the series will borrow characters and ideas from both Stephen King's acclaimed novel and Kubrick's mind-bending movie adaptation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 10-episode horror series will follow "the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction".

Shudder.

As to the script, the production is rumoured to be written by Castle Rock's Dustin Thomason and Scott Brown.

Abrams' production company Bad Robot will look after production for Overlook.

The show will be reportedly be available to watch via new streaming platform HBO Max, which is set to launch in the US in May.

Abrams is clearly a busy chap, because he's also working on a further two series for the streaming service.

The first is darkly tinged superhero flick Justice League Dark, of DC origin, while the other is crime drama Duster, which Abrams is currently co-writing with LaToya Morgan (The Walking Dead).

With Overlook in the early stages of production, no air date or cast details have been released as yet.

This scare-filled spin-off can't come soon enough.

We're off to watch the original to get us in the mood. Remember, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
