Grey's Anatomy Just Brought Back The Ghosts Of Meredith's Past

In one of the most emotional episodes yet, Greys Anatomy brought back the ghosts of Meredith's pasts including Doc the dog and Derek.

We have no idea what the creators of Grey's Anatomy were trying to do to us in the latest episode, but if they wanted us sobbing like babies, then they succeeded.

No matter how many episodes of the series we watch, it still manages to tug at the heartstrings and the last episode was no different.

The episode saw the return of George O'Malley, Lexie Grey, and her late husband Derek, we're getting emotional just thinking about it.

The main medical story line followed a girl named Flora who needs intestinal surgery, performed by Meredith.

However, Meredith is also told by Dr. Richard Weber that her estranged father, Thatcher, has leukemia and only weeks to live, which sees her struggling through the episode to decide whether to get in contact with him or not.

During surgery, she tells Alex Karev that she doesn't need to grieve for her dad as he has been a ghost for years, but seen as though this episode falls on the Day of The Dead, the Mexican holiday that celebrates and honours loved ones who have passed away, it isn't going to be that simple.

In Flora's hospital room, her family made a make shift altar to display pictures of her past family members, as Meredith apologises for their loss, Flora's grandmother has some pretty deep advice for her.

She tells Meredith: "The veil between our world and the spirit world is very thin. The marigolds, the photos, the mementos, they help guide them to us", she then puts a marigold in Meredith's hair.

Now, we're not sure whether that marigold had powers to rise the dead as the ghosts or Meredith's past begin to appear as soon as she has it in.

As a very emotional Spanish-language version of Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars plays in the background we are reminded of everyone Meredith has lost.

George O'Malley in his blue scrubs calls out to Meredith and Lexie Grey appears behind the admin desk as Meredith says goodbye to a nurse.

Her mother, Dr. Ellis Grey, then watches her leave out of the door, as Doc the dog follows her down the hallway.

Now we wish we had been warned because this is when we really needed some tissues, Doc leads Meredith to her late husband Derek, who says simply, "Hey" before Mark Sloane also appears beside him.

While Meredith doesn't know any of them are there it is an important message as it reminds us of all the people she has lost over the years.

Showrunner Krista Vernoff spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the inspiration for the episode's little twist.

She said: "The holiday is about the dead visiting the living and the living inviting the dead to come for a visit. So, it felt like the perfect opportunity to see the people Meredith has lost."
