Tonight's GBBO Will See Some Controversial Changes And People Aren't Happy

A major change is coming to Tuesday evening's Great British Bake Off with the addition of a vegan week for the first time ever.

The bakers will be ditching the traditional ingredients of eggs and butter for dairy-free and plant based alternatives to create vegan recipes, although some fans are already complaining on Twitter about the move.

"Next time, we're throwing out the eggs and butter in our first ever vegan week," announced host Noel Fielding at the end of last week's GBBO instalment.

Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood's challenges will see the bakers attempt to create vegan meringues, which are traditionally made with whisked egg whites, as well as huge showstoppers, one of which was seen slipping off a stand in Tuesday's preview.

"We wanted something different and something to represent what was happening in this country. Veganism is something that seems to be growing. That's why it is in," Paul explained about the addition of vegan week.

And he's right, as 540,000 people followed a vegan diet in the UK in 2016, but there's been a significant spike in that figure two years later, as it's now thought to be around 3.5 million.

Despite this, Bake Off fans have flocked to Twitter to vent their frustrations at vegan week.

"Almost want to boycott Bake Off next week, vegan week??" fumed one person.

While a second chimed in: "Next week it's friggin' Vegan Week on Bake Off???? Give me strength!!! Noooooo!!!!!"

"Vegan week on Bake Off is like having a no brick week on Grand Designs," mocked a third viewer.

But like Paul already pointed out, plenty of people are turning to vegan diets here in the UK, so it's only fitting that Bake Off follows suit to be inclusive of all viewers.

"If there's a demand for vegan food, it's only right that it should feature on #GBBO," shared one person, and another exclaimed: "So so excited for Vegan week on Bake Off tomorrow. How great."

Others claimed that there was no outrage during GBBO's gluten-free weeks in past years, reasoning that a vegan diet may be because of allergies too.

Great British Bake Off airs at 8pm on Channel 4 on Tuesdays.
