Great British Bake Off fans couldn't cope when Terry broke down in tears during his exit interview after being eliminated from the competition on Tuesday evening.

During last night's double eviction, Terry and Karen left the tent after an unsuccessful spice week.

However, it was Terry's exit interview that had viewers in tears, as he opened up about the 'love of his life' - his late wife Joanna who passed away last year.

Terry admitted that the baking show had helped him to grieve. He said: "I said I wouldn't get upset.

"It's funny when you're on your own... my wife and I were very happy and that was a massive loss.

"There wasn't anything to fill the void for a very long time so it's given me a focus.

"I've met some lovely people I'm sure we'll keep in touch for a very long time."

Terry continued: "It's been a big help and something I'll remember for a long time.

"I won't stop baking. I'm very much looking forward to more projects carried out in a bigger time frame."

Fans took to Twitter to show their support for Terry, and one wrote: "Terry baking to fill the void of losing his wife has broken me and I didn't realise I could get this emotional over a cooking show. #GBBO [sic]."

Another added: "Oh, Terry I can't imagine the pain of losing someone you loved so much. I never expected a show about cakes to hurt me in such a way, always cherish what you have while you can [sic]."

A third user said: "Terry you were my favourite. So glad you found something that made you smile again. Good luck with whatever you do next. Think you'd be great on tv [sic]."

The emotional interview was aired just days after Terry's family revealed how the baking show was helping him to grieve.

Terry lost his beloved wife, Joanna, to cancer a year ago, and he has battled through the baking show while quietly grieving.

Terry's mother-in-law, Marion Banner, has said how proud primary school headteacher Joanna would have been of her husband and that she was his biggest fan.

Marion said she was surprised when she found out Terry would be appearing on the Channel 4 baking show after he kept it a secret until the official line up was announced.
