The countdown is firmly on until the Call the Midwife Christmas special airs on BBC on 25th December.

With excitement mounting, we've been scouring the internet looking for teasers about festive one-off and their interesting trip to Scotland, which will no doubt be filled with tears and heartwarming moments.

Here's everything we know so far about the beloved TV drama:

When is the Call the Midwife Christmas special on TV?

The 90-minute festive special is set to air on Christmas Day at 7pm on BBC One. If you can't wait for the Christmas one-off, you can catch up on previous seasons' which have been uploaded to the BBC iPlayer.

What will happen in the Call the Midwife Christmas special?

The seasonal special follows Mother Mildred and the gang as they leave Poplar and travel to the Outer Hebrides for the Christmas break.

However, their trip is far from a relaxing festive getaway as their medical expertise is desperately needed by the small Scottish community, who have a lack of nurses and midwives.

Helen George, who plays Trixie, told This Morning recently: "We go up there because there''s a small community without any medical health care of advisors, nurses or doctors, and there's a community in need so we go up and help in our own way.

"There's some babies! I have some scenes with a cow!

Despite their picturesque surroundings, the BBC revealed that there will be plenty of problems for the ladies of Nonnatus House on the remote island.

The broadcaster explained in the official synopsis: "Exposed to the elements, they operate in bleak conditions with limited access to water and electricity to help their patients, just in time to reconvene in Poplar for Christmas."

Call the Midwife creator Heidi Thomas branded the special a "magical" adventure and told What's On TV that she wanted to put the gang into an "uncomfortable" situation.

Thomas explained: "It was high time to take the Christmas special out of Poplar and our characters out of their comfort zones.

"I wanted to put them somewhere uncomfortable because that's where drama is born."

When is Call the Midwife back for series 9?

Following the Christmas special, the ninth series of the beloved drama will return to screens in early 2020 on BBC One.

The upcoming series will include eight episodes and will continue where the festive special finishes off - although it's set to be darker, according to showrunner Heidi Thomas.

"After a magical Christmas experience in the Hebrides featuring wild seas, stormy skies and some very disobedient sheep, we return to the harsher reality of city life in 1965″, said the executive producer.
