S8 Ep1 spoiler warning!

We've been waiting impatiently for Game of Thrones' final season for two years, and the first episode of season eight brought the show's infamous betrayals, heartbreaks, alliances, battles and fire-breathing dragons back with a bang.

Don't read ahead if you're keen to avoid any spoilers, but if you've already watched, read on to relive the biggest moments of the episode.

The much-anticipated episode began with several heartfelt Winterfell reunions. Finally, the Stark siblings were back together where it all began, although deeply altered: with half the family dead, the remaining members, Sansa, Jon, Bran and Arya regrouped at their family home.

Arya, brilliantly played by Maisie Williams, went through a range of emotions as she witnessed men she thought were dead riding back into Winterfell: not just her brother Jon Snow, but the blacksmith, and her friend, Gendry, and the Hound, whom she had left for dead several seasons ago.

Other poignant reunions included the meeting of husband and wife Sansa and Tyrion Lannister, of friends Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly and of brother and sister Theon and Yara Greyjoy.

Most significant was the reunion of Jaime Lannister and Bran Stark, who haven't been seen together since the very first episode of season one, when Jaime pushed Bran out of the window for witnessing him sleeping with his sister Cersei, setting the events of the series in motion. We can't wait to see how Bran, now the Three-Eyed Raven, gets his revenge

However, the show does what it does best: alongside the emotional moments, dramatic build-up, gory scenes and footage of northerners looking shocked to see Daenerys Targaryen' two remaining dragons flying above Winterfell, there were plenty of light points too, with Varys and Tyrion sharing a jokey exchange.

Tensions between Sansa, the Lady of Winterfell, and Daenerys, the Mother of Dragons, were already clear to see in the opening episode: there is no love lost between these two powerful women, and it will be interesting to see where their mistrust of each other takes them as this season progresses.

Outside of Winterfell, the pregnant, terrifying Cersei Lannister proved her evil streak has no bounds; she bribed Ser Bronn of the Blackwater to kill not just her loathed brother Tyrion, but also her beloved lover and the father of her children, Jaime, with a crossbow for "poetic justice".

There was romance budding too: not just in the stolen looks between Arya and Gendry, and in the unexpected pairing of Cersei and Euron Greyjoy, but between Jon and Daenerys, who go on a magical dragon ride amid stunning northern scenery, ending up by a picturesque waterfall and sharing loving words and a kiss.

What fans have looked forward to the most is the moment that eight seasons have been building up to: when Jon finally learns his true parentage.

As revealed at the end of season seven, Jon is not the illegitimate son of Ned Stark, but instead, the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, the late Prince of Dragonstone, and the older brother of Daenerys. It was left to his faithful friend Samwell Tarly to reveal the news: Jon's name is not Jon, but Aegon Targaryen.

This unexpected development means that Jon's current love interest, Daenerys, is actually his aunt. While the show is certainly not shy about family members getting it on (Cersei and Jaime, we're looking at you), we're almost certain that Jon's new knowledge about his status as the rightful heir to the Iron Throne - and the nephew of the woman he's been romancing - will put an end to the budding and unknowingly incestuous relationship. But will Jon betray Daenerys? Will she stand back and let him take the Iron Throne as the rightful heir? We can't wait to see how it unfolds.

There's just one more important point to make. If you ever wondered what happened to Ed Sheeran's character, be in no doubt: one of Bronn's prostitutes revealed the fate of Eddie: that his face was "burnt off" and that he's "got no eyelids now". So we guess we won't be seeing any more famous faces popping up in cameo roles again.
