Eastenders characters weren't having the usual in the Queen Vic on Thursday. The special episode of the soap was dedicated to its characters discussing and debating the issue of sexual consent. And viewers were quick to praise the show for tackling the tricky, yet important issue.

The episode, which is uniquely set in a single location and delves deep into one plot, centres around one of the show's latest story lines where Ruby Allen, played by actress Louisa Lytton, says she was raped after a night out, but the men who have been accused say she had given her consent.

The show involved the rape case making headlines in the local Eastenders paper and characters in the Queen Vic gossiping and speculating on the identity of the anonymous victim.

The episode then progressed along with the conversation as it led to a heated discussion on the topic of sexual consent among the Queen Vic's punters.

Ruby, the victim, is forced to silently listen as she tries to enjoy a quiet drink with Stacey Slater, played by Lacey Turner. This is not helped by the fact that Martin Fowler, played by James Bye, is also in the pub with a gang of mates - the men who have been charged. Heated discussion ensues as Ruby's identity as the victim is revealed.

Viewers were quick to praise the show with one fan tweeting:

The writers were also commended for addressing both sides of the issue:

And as much of the viewpoints were toxic and hard to listen to for many, it at least highlights to people who aren't aware, just how so many people think girls 'ask for it' by dressing a certain way or not saying no.

I really liked the touch with Patrick's story. Made the point that traditionally the man would 'woo' the woman until she gives in, and everyone watched on with smiles like this was admirable. Times have changed, women are standing up for themselves
Actress Louisa Lytton who plays Ruby personally thanked the show's writers:

So proud to be part of such a powerful storyline and such an important episode take a bow

The BBC was quick to proffer support to those affected by the issues raised and tweeted: "Details of organisations offering information and support with sexual abuse are available at bbc.co.uk/actionline, or you can call for free, at any time to hear recorded information on 0800 077 077."
