Viewers of Coronation Street were left in tear last night after Sinead Tinker was told she has just months to live.

The sad scenes aired in Wednesday night's episode (11th September) where Sinead, played by Katie McGlynn, and husband Daniel (Rob Mallard) were given the heartbreaking news that the 25-year-old's cervical cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and liver, giving her just four months to live.

Despite the tragic storyline, viewers of the soap are praising ITV for dealing with the cancer in such a "relatable" and "real" way.

One viewer said she was in "absolute floods of tears" while watching the show, adding: "Cancer has affected the majority of people throughout their life, we can all relate to the struggles Daniel and Sinead are going through. The emotion portrayed in tonight's episode was absolutely raw and real. #corrie"

"My heart is breaking watching Sinead's story this is a reality for so many people, even without a terminal diagnosis cancer is terrifying. We really need to find a cure," urged another.

"Can relate to Sinead's situation a little too well, and she's 5 months old today #Corrie," penned a third.

"So relatable with sinead this exact thing happened to my grandma 5 months ago it's so heartbreaking #Corrie," added another.

The character was first diagnosed with cervical cancer last year, but appeared to be recovering well throughout the series.

However, during Sinead and Daniel's wedding day on Monday night's episode (9th September), Sinead's auntie, Beth Tinker, finds a lump on her neck as she helps the bride get ready. After the wedding, Sinead goes for tests at the doctors.

The show's producers worked with cancer charities Mummy's Star and Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust to ensure Sinead Tinker's cancer struggle has been treated sensitively.

Mummy's Star CEO Pete Wallroth, who founded the charity when his wife died after the birth of their daughter, spoke about the charity's involvement in the hit soap.

"Cancer in pregnancy is a subject that few understand and even less realise happens to two women a day in the UK," he said.

"So to have been asked by the Coronation Street team to work with them in advising on the storyline over the last 12 months with Rob and Katie has been both a pleasure and a wonderful opportunity.

Rebecca Shoosmith, the Head of Support Services for Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, called the show's involvement "fantastic that the programme has been able to raise awareness of the disease".

She added: "We have been working very closely with Coronation Street on this incredibly moving and poignant storyline over the last year to ensure it is portrayed as accurately and sensitively as possible."

In previews from upcoming episodes, the couple are seen visiting hospices to help Sinead in her final months.
