In the penultimate episode, viewers watched as Celeste (Nicole Kidman) asked the judge to call Mary Louise (Meryl Streep) to the stand as the court case to get custody of her grandchildren came to a close.

Yet, it was the finale that truly brought fireworks when Celeste cross-examined her divisive mother-in-law and revealed that Mary Louise caused the car crash that led to the death of her other son Raymond when Perry (Alexander Skarsgärd) was a child.

During the courtroom rumble, Celeste claimed Mary Louise lost her temper and blamed Perry for the fatal accident, which led to his martial abuse of Celeste and the rape of Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley).

In one last bid to shock her mother-in-law, who was still defending her son's innocence, Celeste played a short video documenting Perry's abuse towards her which one of her young twins captured, shocking Mary Louise, the courtroom and the other members of the 'Monterey Five'.

The shocking revelation eventually led to Celeste retaining custody of her children as her mother-in-law left Monterey with the knowledge her son was an abusive monster.

The emotional scene had viewers at home applauding Celeste's takedown of Mary Louise, who was overdue her comeuppance following her treatment of her daughter-in-law throughout the second series.

One fan shared on Twitter: "OMG: That was a great courtroom scene! #BigLittleLies Nicole Kidman is amazing. How far she has come."

"Can Season 3 of #BigLittleLies just be Celeste in a court room interrogating a different Academy Award winner every week?" another posted.

A viewer reflected: "Nicole Kidman cross-examining Meryl Streep was really and truly masterful".

"Serving pink lawyer realness while absolutely OBLITERATING the prosecution we stan," a fourth penned.

Even Reese Witherspoon, who plays Madeline Martha Mackenzie on the series, shared: "Watching @NicoleKidman and #MerylStreep play that court room scene was one of the greatest honours of my career. A moment I will never forget for my whole life #bll2".

What a finish to season two!
