What will the documentary be about?

The doc will focus on the disaster, which took place on 26th April 1986, and the devastating aftermath that followed. When the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant suffered a huge explosion 35 years ago, radioactive material was released across Belarus, Russia and Ukraine - and even as far as western Europe.

The documentary will see Ben living inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone - aka the area immediately surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant - for seven days.

It's a feature-length special of 90 minutes, and cameras have been granted access into the plant itself, as well as the deserted towns and forests in surrounding areas.

Ben will even venture inside Control Room 4, where the events unfolded, and has been granted special access to witness the original Chernobyl sarcophagus. Ben must only spend just five minutes inside the control room, due to radiation safety restrictions.

During his time living in the Exclusion Zone, Ben will also visit the remains of Hospital 126. Channel 5 explain: "Ben uncovers the strange place Chernobyl has now become, from the abandoned listening post of the Soviet era, to the makeshift and unofficial living spaces now emerging inside the abandoned tenements.

"... The documentary will also offer an ecological glimmer of hope as Ben documents the limited return of nature to the abandoned town.

"With the state of the environment at a breaking point, it is hoped that the documentary will shine a light on what Chernobyl's legacy means in today's world, and whether we can find hope in what is still the most radioactive place on Earth."

What has Ben Fogle said about doc?

Speaking about the documentary and his experience, Ben said: "With the news of Ukraine seeking to designate Chernobyl as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, I'm proud to share this incredible journey with viewers as we delve into the past of Chernobyl, uncover its secrets and bring awareness to its historic significance, while making an amazing discovery of wildlife returning, from horses to wolves and bears."

Meanwhile, commissioning editor Guy Davies added: "Ben's extraordinary journey feels like the ultimate life in the wild, and as he discovers the people who still inhabit the exclusion zone, and enters the original control room 4, this special film reveals hidden discoveries in an environment few have explored in such detail."

Who else will feature?

During the doc, Ben will meet with a police officer who was on duty the night of the disaster and witnessed the explosion.

He also joins other local police, who are looking for "stalkers" - a group of thrill seekers who attempt to enter the zone illegally.
