YouTube sensation 'Baby Shark' is being developed into an animated series for Nickelodeon.

It's the news parents never wanted but, let's be honest, was inevitable for the viral music craze, which has nearly 3 billion YouTube views.

The song about a family of sharks became an internet sensation when it launched on YouTube in November 2015 and recorded a 14-week-streak on the UK Top 40 Chart in 2018.

'Baby Shark' then had a renaissance earlier this year and leapt into the Top 10, peaking at number six in the chart.

Kids channel Nickelodeon will team up with Korean entertainment brand Pinkfong, the company behind the phenomenon, to develop the original series.

Speaking about the new series, Ramsey Naito, EVP Nickelodeon Animation, said: "'Baby Shark' has captured the imagination of millions of fans around the world, so it's no surprise it's one of the top 10 most-viewed videos on YouTube ever.

"At the heart of any popular piece of content is a terrific character, and we have a great opportunity to further explore the world of Baby Shark and follow this family through some great animated adventures on Nickelodeon."

The viral sensation has amassed nearly 3 billion views on YouTube.

While Pam Kaufman, President of Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products, told CNN in a statement: "'Baby Shark' is a multiplatform phenomenon, and appetite for more content and products is strong around the world.

"Our outstanding creative teams are moving fast to get more Baby Shark product across multiple categories to retailers, and our content team is excited to develop a terrific original animated series that will bring this property to new heights and even more fans."

Despite the announcement, no details have been released about when the show will premiere or how many episodes will feature in the series.

Perhaps parents can breathe a sign of relief for the time being - but you've been warned.
