Anna Friel's New ITV Drama Looks Seriously Good

It's been a while since we had a nice drama to dig our teeth into, so Deep Water couldn't be coming at a better time.

The six-part ITV drama is due for release next month and it honestly sounds like a mash-up of Marcella, Top of the Lake and Big Little Lies.

ITV

Starring Emmy-winning Anna Friel, the drama is set against the scenic Lake District and follows the lives of three women, who are connected by the school gates, as they all have children of the same age. The women are "each struggling to keep their heads above very deep water," as they seek to do the best for their families but have to make tough choices in the process. (See, Big Little Lies, vibes.)

Anna Friel, who wowed in Marcella, plays Lisa Kallisto, a mother-of-three who is struggling to juggle family life with her business. Sinead Keenan of Little Boy Blue plays Roz, is a physiotherapist drowning in debt caused by her partner. Rosalind Eleazar, a Screen Nation Rising Star, plays Kate Riverty, a wealthy and attractive mother with a seemingly perfect life. But of course, not all is as it seems.

The trailer is predictably teasey, and while the plot is kept vague, we are treated to a few tidbits. We know there's a missing child, Friel's character has been getting in the lake, for some reason, and there's a ton of hushed secrecy. One thing's for sure, the cinematography is beautiful. Take a look:

The story was written by BAFTA-nominated Anna Symon, the writer behind Indian Summers and Mrs Wilson, and was adapted from a novel by critically-acclaimed author, Paula Daly. ITV says Deep Water is a "modern look at families, the pressure of juggling busy lives, and is an exploration of what it means to be a 'perfect' mother."

"Anna has cleverly woven together two of Paula's brilliant novels, to create a wonderful modern and layered series. It's about three very different women on their own incredible and often shocking journeys, whose lives connect at the school gates. It's funny, sexy, truthful and often outrageous, and should have the audience asking what they would do to hold their own family together. I am delighted to be working with Kudos on this great new series for ITV," says Polly Hill, ITV by Head of Drama.

We don't have an exact release date, but ITV have announced Deep Water will be hitting our screens in August. Cannot wait.
