New Teaser For 'The Handmaid's Tale' Offers Major Clue On Future Of Gilead

The previous two seasons of The Handmaid's Tale have made things look fairly hopeless for June and the other women of Gilead. While the resistance has been building, it's looked that there's little hope for women like June, Ofglen and Moira unless they are able to make the risky escape to Canada.

As we anxiously await the third season, we're being dripfed teasers that hint at the fate of the Handmaids. Season three will be dropping on Hulu June 5 in the US, with no word on when we'll get it in the UK. As season two showed around a month later last time around, we can expect a similar timeline.

The trailer has already teased to a wider world outside of Gilead, with June, played by Elisabeth Moss, saying "Officially, there's no such thing as escape" as she builds a resistance that seems to include Mrs Waterford, her fellow Handmaids, Nick, and a whole lot of violence.

As we already knew, in The Handmaid's Tale, America is divided into different colonies rather than states in the aftermath of a second Civil War.

To tease the third season, Hulu have released a map of what Gilead looks like now. The map shows the divisions in the country with a key: while green refers to the districts loyal to the Republic of Gilead, pink refers to districts under conflict, while red refers to areas occupied by rebels.

There is a dark pink patch on the map near Massachusetts which seems to indicate that the area is either rebel-occupied or under conflict. This could indicate that June has either successfully taken the area back with her rebels, or is actively attempting to.

For some of the first season, we were led to believe that the entire world was under Gilead's oppressive regime. We then learned that both Mexico and Canada were outside of its borders, with some lucky people managing to escape into Canada.

Now, it appears as if areas of the US aren't actually under the same rules - meaning that it's likely the Republic has lied to women to lead them to believe there is no hope. By implying wider threat and taking away hope, they've managed to stop women from attempting to leave. But this new map is a clear indicator that there are more on the side of the resistance, or at least not involved in Gilead, than we thought.

The season three trailer seems to signal that June is taking an active role in the resistance, recruiting women to kick back against Gilead. Hundreds of Handmaids are seen towards the end standing under a gigantic cross. Season two ended with June choosing to stay in Gilead and hand over her young daughter Nicole in order to rescue her eldest, Hannah, and we're holding out hope that this new teaser suggests June's devastating story might have some sort of happy resolution. But of course, in Gilead, hope it often hard to hold on to.
