Hunger Games fans, we have some very, very exciting news for you: a new book (and probably film) is coming next year. Eeek!

The Hunger Games franchise ended in 2015 with Mockingjay Part II, which saw Katniss marry Peeta and move into a new future uncontrolled by the capital, following the massive war.

But now, Suzanne Collins, the creator of the multi-million pound franchise, has revealed a new installment will hit shelves in 2020. The book will be a prequel, set 64 years before the beginning of the first story.

In a statement, Collins said the book would go back to the years following the failed rebellion in Panem, called the 'Dark Days'.

"With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are, and what we perceive is required for our survival," she said.

"The reconstruction period 10 years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days - as the country of Panem struggles back to its feet - provides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views of humanity."

The book will be published by Scholastic Trade. President Ellie Berger said in a statement: "Suzanne Collins is a master at combining brilliant storytelling, superb world building, breathtaking suspense, and social commentary.

Lionsgate, who distributed all four other films, confirmed that there will be a movie in a recent statement to The Associated Press.

"As the proud home of the 'Hunger Games' movies, we can hardly wait for Suzanne's next book to be published. We've been communicating with her during the writing process and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie," they said.

It's still too early to speculate on who'll be cast in the film given we don't even know anything about the plot or characters, but as the prequel will be set way before Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark's time, we know there'll be no Jennifer Lawrence or Josh Hutcherson to grace our screens.

The movie will follow the first in the franchise The Hunger Games, released in May 2012, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, released in November 2013, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I, released in November 2014 and the latest The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part II, which hit cinemas in November 2015.

The novel, which is currently untitled, is scheduled for release on 19th May 2020. We cannot wait.
