On 19th September 2016, taxi driver Christopher Halliwell was found guilty of the murder of Becky Godden-Edwards, but it's a result that detective on the case, Steve Fulcher, took years to get.

Becky, 21, was brutally murdered and dumped in a nearby field in 2003 after being picked up by Halliwell. It was only until another murder, that of 22-year-old Sian Emma O'Callaghan, was discovered in 2011, that Halliwell led police to Becky's body.

However, despite Halliwell's confession, DS Fulcher failed to caution the murderer and denied him access to a solicitor during the period that the confessions were obtained, meaning they were inadmissible.

Instead, the detective acted on a window of opportunity, where after Halliwell admitted to Sian's killing, he should have taken the killer back to the police station, DS Fulcher instead drove him to the field on the assurance that he'd be lead to another body.

In October 2012, Halliwell was sentenced to life for the murder of Sian, but not Becky.

Due to the mishandling, DS Fulcher resigned in 2014, two years before Halliwell would be charged with Becky's murder.

Now, a six-part series on ITV explores the complicated case and the detective that fought tirelessly for Becky's justice.

Martin Freeman stars as DS Fulcher, while Imelda Staunton plays Becky's mum Karen Edwards, the grieving mother who fought for nearly a decade for her daughter. Killer Christopher Halliwell is played by Joe Absolom.

Victim Becky is played by The Bodyguard's Stephanie Hyam, while Sian is played by actress Florence Howard.

Charlie Cooper plays Sian's boyfriend Kevin Reape, who first alerted police of her disappearance in 2011.

Becky, a personal assistant, had been leaving a nightclub in the early hours of the morning and walking the 800 meters to the flat she shared with her boyfriend in Swindon when she went missing.

Charlie alerted police to Sian's disappearance the following morning and mobile phone analysis found that her phone had picked up her worried boyfriend's text messages near the Savernake Forest area.

After an urgent witness appeal lead police to a Toyota Avensis, police arrested the 47-year-old taxi driver on suspicion of Sian's murder. Later the same day, her body was discovered by police in a shallow grave.

The Confession begins tonight on Monday, 2nd September at 9pm on ITV.
