After much anticipation, Nintendo's Mario Kart app will be released next month, but only for a select number of Android users.

Nintendo has revealed it is now accepting applications for Android users to beta test the new game, called 'Mario Kart Tour'.

Unfortunately, applications are currently only open for users in the US and Japan, as the programme runs from 22nd May through to the 4th June.

But, Mario Kart fans elsewhere in the world can sit tight, as it means we're one step closer to the app being released on both iOS and Android, which is anticipated to happen in summer 2019.

Nintendo first revealed it was developing an app for Mario Kart at the beginning of 2018, and word on its development has stayed quiet ever since.

While we do know it was originally supposed to launch in March, the Japanese gaming giant pushed the launch date back to summer, a few months ago.

The brand said it needs more time to "improve quality of the application and expand the content offerings after launch," Variety reports.

As well as the eagerly anticipated 'Mario Kart Tour', Nintendo is also hoping to release 'Dr Mario World', which is said to be an action puzzle game involving Mario.

The 'Mario Kart Tour' app is being made by Nintendo and DeNA, the same developer behind 'Super Mario Run' and 'Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp', so it's fair to say we're expecting big things.

Experts have suggested it could be Nintendo's first 'billion dollar app,' Bloomberg has reported, with many analysts expecting the app to be yet another runaway hit for the company.

Nintendo's biggest app to date is 'Fire Emblem Heroes', which grossed at approximately $500 million since it was first launched two years ago.

The countdown is officially on, but will it live up to expectations?
