Wes Nelson has finally addressed his split from Megan Barton-Hanson in a candid interview, three weeks after the Love Island stars called time on their seven-month romance.

While ex-girlfriend Megan has discussed their break-up openly and suggested that the Dancing On Ice 'didn't love her back', Wes kept quiet on his own take on the split.

But speaking to OK! Magazine, Wes hit back at Megan's accusations and claimed that the break-up was a mutual decision.

"To say I didn't fight for her is silly because it was a mutual decision. I didn't just say, 'That's it. I'm done'," said the former engineer. "Fight for what? We both ended the relationship. If she wanted me to say more or do more that day I didn't know that."

Wes continued: "Of course I still love Megan. You can't just drop the feelings after a week of being split up, but loving someone doesn't mean that they are the right person for you."

Shortly before and after their break-up, speculation arose that something was going on between Wes and his Dancing On Ice partner Vanessa Bauer. Megan claimed she wouldn't be shocked if they got together, further fuelling rumours.

But the Love Island star hit back at these accusations, claiming that the skating professional wasn't his type.

Wes explained: "People have said, 'Why don't you get with Vanessa?' I see it in my comments all the time, but for one has anyone ever asked me if I fancy her? No I don't. Vanessa is not my cup of tea."

Megan announced their break-up with a light-hearted, Gwyneth Paltrow-inspired Instagram statement last month in which they promised to co-parent their shared hamster, Jon Snow.

"It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well under a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate," read part of the split announcement.

Wes and Megan aren't the only Love Island couple to split in recent weeks, as Kaz Crossley and Josh Denzel went their separate ways last month.
