Rio Ferdinand and Kate Wright announced their engagement yesterday, and now the professional footballer's young son, Lorenz, has shared a touching message following the news.

The couple shared the Abu Dhabi proposal on Instagram, prompting an influx of congratulatory messages from their fans, as well as from Rio's son.

"So glad she said yes I am so proud of you dad and Kate love u both so much," the 12-year-old posted with love heart emojis underneath the series of images.

Rio shared a screenshot of the moving message to his story, adding: "My son trying to make his dad all emotional and s***."

Widower Rio has one daughter, Tia, seven, and two sons Tate, 10, and Lorenz with his wife Rebecca Ellison who sadly passed away of breast cancer in 2015.

Rebecca reportedly gave Rio her 'blessing' to find love again, telling her close friend in the months leading up to her death that she couldn't bear the thought of him being 'alone and miserable'.

Kate revealed earlier this year that Rio's three kids had been encouraging him to get down on one knee for her for quite some time.

"They say on a daily basis, 'When are you giving us a brother and sister? When are you getting married?' It's lovely how far we've come," the reality star explained on This Morning.

She continued: "Every day they'll say, 'Dad, are you going to do it yet?' Rio's like, 'Oh god, I've got three kids and Kate, and thinking when are we going to do it'."

Images of the proposal showed the third kids rushing to hug their dad and Kate as he popped the question.

The sportsman has openly spoke about how TOWIE star Kate has helped him and his young children deal with the grief - she famously 'quit showbiz' to focus on the family.

"The kids are also happy, they deserve to be after going through tragedy in the last few years of their life," Rio said on This Morning. "There's not been one stage of going into this relationship where they've not been involved.

"As long as they feel they are involved and in the conversation, I think there's a chance they can reach happiness."

Rio and Kate reportedly met through a mutual friend, and have been dating for almost two years.
