Sweet moment the Queen shared her blanket with Meghan during their first engagement

Sweet moment the Queen shared her blanket with Meghan during their first engagement

Meghan mentioned the moment in her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

People are remembering the sweet moment between Queen Elizabeth and Meghan Markle during their first solo engagement together.

Four years ago, the pair shared a sweet exchange, when the Queen shared her blanket with the Duchess of Sussex - an event that Meghan discussed during her tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

In the precious clip from 2018, the Queen appeared to be looking out for her new granddaughter-in-law:

After the Queen finished with her pleasantries, she headed towards the car, followed swiftly by a grinning Meghan.

When the pair get into the car, Meghan can be seen helping to smooth a woollen blanket over the Queen's legs, before the Queen turns to her to share some of the covering with her.

Meghan opened up about how the Queen said: "Meghan, come on," and stretched her woollen blanket across the pair of them.

The moment was captured by Eileen Owens, 56, who was sitting in The Coach House Inn in Chester - a pub owned by her husband Leslie Owens, 62.

Watching the moment live, Eileen says that she had 'no idea the significance of that moment', until she saw Meghan's interview with Oprah.

Meghan briefly mentioned the sweet exchange in her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

She said last year: “At the time it just seemed like a sweet gesture - it seemed like they were quite close.

“The two seemed to be chatting and getting on quite well and the Queen really seemed to like Meghan.

"It wasn't just the Queen that liked her either. Everyone watching seemed to adore Meghan - people watching were screaming her name."

Speaking about the moment during her interview with Oprah Winfrey back in 2021, Meghan recalled: “The Queen has always been wonderful to me […] I really love being in her company.

“At one of our first engagements together [...] we were in the car going between engagements, and she has a blanket that sits across her knees for warmth, and it was chilly.

“She was like, ‘Meghan, come on’ and put it over my knees as well.

“It made me think of my grandmother, she’s always been warm and inviting, and really welcoming.”

The couple who captured the moment didn't realise the significance of the video until they saw Meghan's interview with Oprah.

Eileen and Leslie were watching the Oprah interview when they realised Meghan was describing a moment they had witnessed first-hand.

Eileen said: “I couldn’t believe it when I heard Meghan telling that story, because I knew exactly what she was referring to. I just thought ‘wow’ when I found the video on my phone.

“At the time we were watching, it didn’t seem too important - but it obviously was for her.

“For that moment to spring to Meghan’s mind, and for her to recall it on TV three years later shows it meant a lot to her.”
