Line of Duty's Martin Compston responds to rumours over season seven return

The sixth series of the police drama finished in May 2021

Line of Duty star Martin Compston has addressed rumours over whether the much-loved crime drama will be back for a seventh series.

It's been well more than a year since fans last saw stars Compston, Vicky McClure and Aidan Dunbar working together on the BBC drama, with the sixth series coming to an end in May 2021.

The most recent episodes of Line of Duty saw the trio manage to expose the identity of H as DC Chloë Bishop found out Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle) was responsible all along.

Though the sixth series resolved the question of the Fourth Man's identity, the storyline left some fans feeling underwhelmed after previously being captivated by the show.

As a result, many are now hoping Line of Duty will make a comeback to allow the characters to redeem themselves, while others just want to see them dive into more mysteries.

Compston discussed the possibility of the show's return during an appearance on Good Morning Britain today (30 December), when he revealed that the main cast members are all on the same page.

Fans are hopeful the series will return for a 7th season.

He explained: "Look, nothing’s changed. I’m really chuffed, we’re all delighted people still want us back. That conversation, we had a really honest one whether we were all up for doing it again, and I believe we all are."

While the cast's willingness does offer up a glimmer of hope, Compston did unfortunately go on to say that 'at this time' the creators don't have any plans to bring back Hastings, Arnott, and Fleming.

"There’s nothing immediate, there’s nothing coming very soon. I think we’d all like to at some point, it’s just all getting us together," he explained.

The actor went on to say the back-and-forth speculation about the show's return isn't 'fair on the fans', adding: ‘I think probably the best thing is to wait for official confirmation from us, because it’s not fair on the fans either, people getting excited and not knowing what’s gonna happen.

"So I think probably wait for confirmation from us, but unfortunately there’s nothing I can give."

Compston's comments echoed some made by McClure during her own appearance on the chat show earlier this month, when she told the hosts: "I’ve got nothing to tell you because I’ve got nothing to tell you. I speak to the lads all the time and we’d love to, we’re all game.

"I think it’s just a case of now – Martin, I think he’s in about nine shows or something. He’s busy [but] I’m sure we’ll get there."

For now we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed!
