Astronomers are predicting that a blood moon could occur next year - just like the one in Netflix's The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina.

The creepy scene sent shivers down viewers' spines, but it could actually be a reality in 2019.

Sabrina was told by her aunt that a blood moon was coming in on her 16th birthday on Halloween, in which she'd be required to sign herself over to the devil in a dark baptism as it only happens every 66 years.

But it won't be so spooky in real life, as it's actually a really beautiful moment in the solar system.

It also doesn't happen every 66 years either, as NASA predicts that there will be 221 of them in the 21st Century - there was one in July this year.

A blood moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse as direct sunlight is blocked by the earth's shadow, causing the bright red/orange hue.

A lunar eclipse usually happens around twice a year, but the blood moon is actually fairly rare as it has to positioned in an exact place to occur.

The light needs to pass through the centre of the earth's shadow - the umbra - to turn the moon red.

Lunar and Planetary Institute's Andrew Shaner told Inverse: "It depends on how much of the moon will pass through the earth's shadow. That will change how much the moon changes colour.

"In some eclipses, it barely passes through the shadow, so it just becomes a darker gray color, versus when it really comes right through the middle of the shadow you get this dark red colour."

While Sabrina's aunt insists the blood moon has to be on Halloween for the baptism, it's not always the case.

Columbia University astronomer Jana Grcevitch predicts that we might be able to see a blood moon on 21st January 2019.
