Incredibly heartwarming footage has emerged of a group of villagers saving a baby elephant, which had been separated from its herd in India...

Local farmers first spotted that the distressed and exhausted calf by a canal, after it had collapsed from dehydration and hunger, meaning it was too weak to walk on its own any longer.

It is unclear how the calf was separated from the rest of its herd in the first place, but thankfully the locals stepped in to bring it to safety.

Helping the poor baby elephant, a group of heroic farmers carried the 100kg animal to safety on their shoulders, all taking turns to hold it as they made their journey.

Hundreds of villagers quickly caught wind of what was going on and joined in with the congregation, all cheering the little nelly on as it was carried.

"Many saw the calf as a good omen for the villa and wanted to adopt it," explained one local, 23-year-old Bibu Das.

But rather than adopting it for themselves, the little elephant was taken to the forest officials, who saw just how poorly it was.

From there, the animal was sent to a government veterinary facility so that it could be nursed back to health.

Thankfully, you will be pleased to hear that the little elephant is going to be okay, and forest officials will try and reunite it with its family when it is feeling much better.
