Crystal Freckles Are Here - And We're Kind Of Into It

Crystal Freckles Are Here - And We're Kind Of Into It

Forget the #freckleselfie trend of 2018, this year freckles are a lot less about going au naturel and a lot more about being boujee

There was a time when freckles were lamented, loathed and covered in several layers of foundation to hide the 'imperfections' from view. But in 2019, not only are freckles being celebrated, they're being highlighted, celebrated and even created. Forget the year of The Pig - this year could be the year of the freckle. And we're loving it.

The trend has been lurking on YouTube and Instagram since mid-2017, but has really gathered speed in the last few months with beauty influencers loving the chance to bling up their usual look.

Far from the hackneyed, symmetrical face jewels of Coachella, glitter freckles were seen on Christian Siriano's New York Fashion Week Autumn 2019 Show with the lovely Ashley Graham closing the show.

Erin Parsons

Makeup artist for the show, Erin Parsons, told Allure: "It sparkles and shines just like the clothes this season."

"I wanted to create it like a veil. Whenever I do stones I usually do them very organically. It almost feels like freckles or beauty marks."

But while the placement of the crystals may look random and organic, the design was actually the same on each model, so was presumably mapped out in advance.

The collection designer, Christian, said that it would be okay to use rhinestones on the models' faces, but it's reported that Ashley Graham insisted on Swarovski crystals (such a queen).

With the crystals and accompanying bright blue mascara on curled, not clumpy, lashes (Maybelline's Deja Blue Snapscara, which is not available in the UK) and silver liner on the inner corners of the eyes, Erin kept the rest of the face pared back and simple.

Expect to see at festivals across the UK this summer - but would you wear the crystal freckle trend?
