Shiraz Gin Exists And We Might Actually Give It A Chance

Shiraz Gin Exists And We Might Actually Give It A Chance

The gin comes with pine forest notes and white pepper and spices.

I think we can all agree that Shiraz and gin are two very different vibes. One a full-bodied red wine made from the famous dark-skinned grape and the other a clear as crystal spirit, best enjoyed with tonic and lime.

In no conceivable world should they ever, EVER be put together. Right?

Wrong, according to Four Pillars Gin, who are ripping up the rule book with their Bloody Shiraz Gin. And you know what, it actually sounds rather delicious.

The Australian distillery says that 2019 was a "terrific season for Victorian cool climate Shiraz" and "a good spring rain, summer brought serious heat resulting in more dominant dark fruit notes than 2018 - tons of delicious plum and blackberry."

Taste-wise, we're told: "Straight up you've got those pine forest notes, white pepper and spices, and the gin is beautifully balanced with a delicious sweetness and nice tannins to finish."

Most of us have tried sloe gin before - a red liqueur made with gin and plums - but the alcohol content is generally quite low, usually less than 30 per cent ABV (alcohol by volume).

However, the Bloody Shiraz Gin uses actual wine grapes to make the special blend, and is 37.8 per cent alcohol - meaning it packs quite the punch! Just what we like to hear...

A 750cl bottle will set you back $85 AUD, which is around £47.70, and can be purchased online.

The gin in unfiltered, meaning it'll develop secondary fruit characters after two years. It's therefore best to consume before then. We're sure there's no doubt in that...

So how do you drink it? Straight? With mixer? In a wine glass? A tumbler? Ice? No ice? Four Pillars recommend drinking it neat with tons or ice or trying it with lemon tonic and a slice of lemon.

Yep, we think we're converted.
