'Mushroom Blonde' is the hottest new trend in hair colour, according to Pinterest - and experts say it looks great on everyone.

While it might not initially sound as dreamy as blackberry or red wine locks, searches for the foodie-inspired hue are up 308 per cent on the site, with colourists dubbing it "universally flattering."

The mid-colour for brunettes wanting to lighten up or blondes coveting a darker look has typically been 'bronde' but that tends to be at the golden, sun-kissed end of the spectrum.

Mushroom is an alternative transitional colour that's much cooler and ashier with a palette of blonde, taupe, beige and grey tones. Think a glossy sexy upgrade on a classic mousy hue.

"Mushroom blonde hair plays with cool brown tones and is a natural extension of the ash/grey trend we saw last season," explains Stefano Ferreia, senior colourist at Live True London (livetruelondon.com) for Redken.

But the aesthetic du jour is far from flat. It's achieved through techniques such as balayage where colour is woven through the hair by painting it on free-hand. The result? A multi-tonal blend of shades... just like you'd find in a pack of your supermarket's finest funghi.

"To achieve this colour, you would need a lifting service such as a balayage or highlights in order to take the undertone (warmth) out of the hair. Next, several colours, each two or three levels darker from each other, would need to be applied and blended.

"Although mushroom hair is growing in popularity, there are a lot of possible variations to this colour which means there really is something to flatter everyone. It's always a good idea to bring photos of the look you're after to ensure your stylist gets it spot on for you," Stefano adds.

Mushroom's not just trending in the hair world - it's a buzz word for skincare, too. Origins has just extended it's best-selling Dr. Andrew Weil Mega-Mushroom line with the addition of a Soothing Sheet Mask, £42, and Hydra Burst Gel Lotion, £52.

Avon's also offering a new K-Beauty Golden Mushroom Sleep Mask, £6, that's loaded with antioxidants.
