Some of us would reel at the thought of leaving our hair unwashed for days at a time, but according to a leading hairdresser, we should be doing exactly that.
Julien Farel, founder of the Julien Farel Restore Salon and Spa in New York, insists the key to good hair is avoiding the temptation to shampoo everyday.
"If you shampoo every day, it will strip your scalp of all its natural oils and can lead to dry, brittle hair," the stylist told GQ.

Instead, Farel believes we should be washing our hair two to three times a week, especially for those with dry or curly hair.
While Farel's hair tip is only anecdotal (he's noticed his clients have far less greasy hair the less they shampoo), and there is no scientific research behind the theory, it's one that's widely accepted in the haircare industry.
This is because shampooing rids the scalp of the natural sebum it produces, which functions to keep the scalp hydrated.

If you get to day two and are struggling with the temptation to wash, just top up with some dry shampoo.
However, there's an exception to the rule. "Only those with an oily scalp should wash every day," Farel notes. So if you find yourself to be a naturally greasy-haired person, maybe stick to the daily washes.
One thing you can use everyday, despite not shampooing, is conditioner which will replenish the nutrients in the hair without ridding it of its natural oils.
